Authored by Philip Doddridge, this hymn on the final judgment and eternal reward was first published posthumously by Job Orton in Hymns Founded on Various Texts in the Holy Scriptures (1755, No. 187). Structured in six stanzas of four lines, it carries the heading "The final Sentence, and Happiness of the Righteous."

The text is absent from the original Doddridge manuscripts. Although included in early collections, its adoption in congregational worship has remained limited.
