Composed by William Bengo Collyer, this missionary hymn was first published in his Hymns Partly Collected and Partly Original (1812, No. 945) in six stanzas of four lines under the heading "A Missionary Hymn for the Opening of the Service." The text was retained in subsequent editions of Collyer's compilation and adopted by several prominent early nineteenth-century hymnal editors across Great Britain.

While its use in British congregations gradually declined over time, the hymn attained extensive popularity throughout North America. In American hymnals, the text was routinely included in collections compiled for evangelistic and missionary assemblies, though it was commonly abbreviated to four or fewer stanzas for practical liturgical use.
