Written by Thomas Kelly, this hymn on spiritual warfare and Christ's leadership was first published in the third edition of his Hymns on Various Passages of Scripture in 1809 (No. 77). Composed in seven stanzas of four lines, it was originally titled after Psalm 18:34, "He teacheth my hands to war." In 1812, Kelly detached the text for inclusion in his Hymns adapted for Social Worship before later restoring it to his main collection, with the full text appearing in the 1853 Dublin edition. The hymn entered Common Use in both Great Britain and America, almost universally appearing in abbreviated arrangements across various denominational hymnals.
