Authored by Harriet Auber, this hymn is a metrical version of Psalm 47 that was first published in her collection Spirit of the Psalms in 1829. Composed in four stanzas of four lines, the original printing included an appended "Hallelujah" at the close of the final stanza. The text reflects Auber's characteristic style of devotional psalm paraphrases, which sought to bring Christian praise into harmony with the Old Testament Psalter. Although its initial adoption in English hymnals was modest, the text found widespread favor across North America, becoming significantly more popular in American collections than in its country of origin.
