Written by Anne Steele on the theme of filial submission (based on Hebrews 12:7), this four-stanza, four-line hymn appeared in a new edition of her Poems on Subjects Chiefly Devotional (1780, vol. iii, p. 132). Daniel Sedgwick included it in his 1863 reprint of her work. Its adoption in public worship has been primarily within American hymnals of various Christian traditions.
