Derived from the sacred writings of Charles Wesley on the ministry of angels and based upon Hebrews 1:14, this hymn enters public worship through two distinct compilation arrangements or centos. The foundational text originates from Wesley's manuscript hymn beginning "Which of the petty Kings of earth," which was first published by Dr. John Leifchild in his Original Hymns in 1842 and later reprinted in the Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley. The first common arrangement appeared in William Mercer's Church Psalter and Hymn Book (1873 Appendix, Number 532), combining select four-line stanzas from Wesley's original poem to emphasize unseen angelic guardianship over believers. A second distinct compilation was adopted in America within the Dutch Reformed Hymns of the Church (New York, 1869). This American version opens with the same stanzas as Mercer's text but incorporates four lines from another famous 1747 Charles Wesley hymn, "Ye simple souls that stray," forming a rich patchwork of Wesleyan hymnody centered on divine protection.
