Written by Francis Pott, this popular hymn first appeared in the second edition of his Hymns fitted to the Order of Common Prayer (1866) in five stanzas of seven lines. Originally titled "For the Dedication of an Organ, or for a Meeting of Choirs," it gained wide acclaim and rapidly spread through major Anglican and international English-speaking hymnals, including Church Hymns and Godfrey Thring's Collection.
