Near to the Heart of God
By Cleland Boyd McAfee (1903)
Lyrics
near to the heart of God;
a place where sin cannot molest,
near to the heart of God.
O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
sent from the heart of God,
hold us, who wait before Thee,
near to the heart of God.
near to the heart of God;
a place where we our Savior meet,
near to the heart of God.
near to the heart of God;
a place where all is joy and peace,
near to the heart of God.

About This Hymn
“Near to the Heart of God” was written in 1903 by Cleland Boyd McAfee, a Presbyterian minister, hymn writer, and theologian, who also served as a professor and choir director. This hymn holds a particularly tender story of origin. McAfee wrote it after experiencing the heartbreaking loss of his two young nieces, who died of diphtheria within days of one another. The song was written as a personal expression of grief and trust in God, meant to comfort his own family. He first sang it with his choir outside the home where his bereaved brother’s family was quarantined, unable to receive visitors. The heartfelt lyrics flowed out of a deep well of sorrow, but they also convey a profound sense of peace and hope that comes only from being close to God’s heart in times of suffering.
The hymn’s text emphasizes the comfort and rest believers find in God, portraying Him as a loving Father who provides a refuge from the trials of life. Each stanza speaks of a place “near to the heart of God” as a source of peace, rest, and solace for those who are weary and heavy-laden. The repetition of this theme makes the song a prayer as much as a hymn, inviting listeners to dwell in God’s presence and take shelter in His unfailing love. The hymn’s gentle tone reflects McAfee’s pastoral heart, offering encouragement to believers facing sorrow or uncertainty. Its simplicity makes it especially powerful, as its message of nearness to God resonates deeply with those who seek comfort in His promises.
“Near to the Heart of God” quickly spread beyond McAfee’s local church and became a beloved hymn across denominations. Its simple, tender melody, also composed by McAfee himself, matches the soft and reflective character of the text. The hymn has stood the test of time as a favorite for funerals, memorials, and moments of deep reflection, where it offers peace and assurance of God’s presence. Many find in this hymn a reminder of Psalm 34:18, which says, “The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” McAfee’s words, born out of personal tragedy, continue to encourage Christians around the world, inviting them to find quiet rest in God’s embrace, no matter the storms they face.
