Solomon S. Allsop was born in 1824. From 1827 to 1830, he resided in Jamaica, where his father laboured as a missionary, before returning to England. Entering the Nonconformist ministry, he served as pastor at Whittlesea, Longford, March, and Burton-on-Trent, eventually serving as President of the Baptist Annual Association in 1879.
During his pastorate at Longford between 1864 and 1868, Allsop composed several hymns for local anniversary services. Among these, "Our hymn of thanks we sing to day" was included in George John Stevenson's School Hymnal (1880, No. 323).
