Johann Augusta was born in Prague around 1500. He was consecrated as a bishop of the Bohemian Brethren in 1532 and became president of their select council in 1537. He served the Brethren until his death at Jung-Bunzlau, Bohemia, on January 13, 1572.
Two of Augusta's Bohemian hymns passed into German translation in the Brethren's Kirchengeseng (1566) and subsequently into English. The first, based on Psalm 84, appeared in the Bohemian Brethren's hymnal of 1559 and was translated into German by Johann Geletzky as "O wie sehr lieblich sind all dein Wohnung," which John Gambold rendered into English as "How amiable Thy habitations are" for the Moravian Hymn Book (1754). The second, based on Psalm 48, appeared in 1561 and was translated into German by Petrus Herbert as "Gott woll'n wir loben," which also entered the Moravian Hymn Book (1789).
