Charles Wesley. [Submission.] Written by Charles Wesley, this personal hymn of Christian trust and submission was first published in Hymns and Sacred Poems (1749, volume II) as No. 35 among fifty-five pieces grouped together under the heading "For Christian Friends." The full poem extends to 10 stanzas of 8 lines in Short Meter. Two notable centos were compiled from this long text for hymnal collections. The first appeared in the Supplement to the Wesleyan Hymn Book (1830, No. 675), taking stanzas i, vii, and ix and arranging them into 6 stanzas of 4 lines. This form was widely retained across various Methodist collections in Great Britain and abroad, including the revised edition of the Wesleyan Hymn Book in 1875 (No. 832). A second selection, comprising stanzas i through v and stanza ix, was compiled by Augustus M. Toplady for his Psalms and Hymns (1776, No. 75), though Toplady's arrangement eventually fell out of use. The full text is preserved in the Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley (volume V, page 448).
