Author of peace unknown. C. Wesley. [Friendship.] First published in his Hymns and Sacred Poems, 1749, vol. ii., No. 236, in 4 stanzas of 6 lines, and again in the Poetical Works, 1868-72, vol. v. pp. 426-7. It is one of several hymns composed by Charles Wesley at the time of his marriage. In its original form it is not found in common use. In 1780, however, John Wesley gave stanzas ii., iii., and iv. in the Wesleyan Hymn Book, No. 498, as "Centre of our hopes Thou art," and from that collection it has passed into several hymnals, specially those of the Methodist denomination.
