First published in Vermanung an gantze Deutsche Nation (Wittenberg, 1541) and included in an altered form in Georg Thym's Hymni aliquot sacri (1552) with the author marked as uncertain, this Latin national fast hymn consists of eight stanzas of four lines. It is reprinted in Philipp Wackernagel's collection (vol. i, p. 271).

The hymn entered English hymnody through Martin Moller's free German translation, "Nimm von uns, Herr, du treuer Gott," published in seven stanzas of six lines in his Meditationes Sanctorum Patrum (Görlitz, 1584) as "A beautiful daily prayer in all time of need." English renderings from Moller's text include John Christian Jacobi's "Remove from us, O faithful God" in Psalmodia Germanica (1722) and "Think on Thy Son's so bitter death" (a translation of stanza 6) in the Moravian Hymn Book (1746).
