Composed by John Morison as a paraphrase of Isaiah 33:13–18, this hymn first appeared as No. 22 in the draft Scottish Translations and Paraphrases (1781) in five stanzas of four lines. In the authorized public worship edition issued by the Church of Scotland that same year, it was renumbered as No. 21, with revisions to lines 2–4 of stanza 2 and lines 3–4 of stanza 3. Its attribution to Morison is confirmed in the notes recorded by William Cameron's eldest daughter.

The hymn has been included in various collections, such as Flett's Collection (Paisley, 1871, No. 296). A recast of the text by Jane Elizabeth Leeson, beginning "Attend, ye people, far and near," was published in her Paraphrases and Hymns for Congregational Singing (1853, No. 47).
