Published in James Montgomery's Christian Psalmist (1825, No. 512), this hymn on mortal brevity consists of five stanzas of four lines and is titled "The Value of a Moment." Montgomery included the text in his Original Hymns (1853, No. 224), though it is not preserved among his primary manuscript collections.
The hymn emphasizes the rapid passage of human life and the critical importance of utilizing every moment for spiritual preparation. In hymnal collections, it is generally presented in an abridged format. For example, John Hamilton Thom's Hymns, Chants, and Anthems (1858) reduced the text to three stanzas, while the Scottish Evangelical Union Hymnal (1878) selected four stanzas for congregational worship.
