This anonymous Latin Passiontide hymn is assigned in the Appendix to the Roman Breviary, which contains local and regional offices to First and Second Vespers and Matins for the Feast of the Prayer of our Lord on Mount Olivet. The feast was historically set for the Tuesday after Septuagesima Sunday, but in modern English usage among both secular clergy and religious orders, it is observed on the Friday after Septuagesima Sunday, serving as the opening service in a specific series of Friday Passiontide commemorations leading to Holy Week.
The hymn was translated into English by Edward Caswall as "See from on high, arrayed in truth and grace." First published in his Lyra Catholica (1849) and reprinted in Hymns & Poems (1873, p. 33) in six stanzas of four lines, it bears the title "Prayer of Our Lord on Mount Olivet." A modified version of Caswall's translation beginning with the line "See from on high, the Source of saving Grace" was included as No. 240 in The Hymnary (1872).
