Angels roll the rock away

First published in Caleb Evans and John Ash's Bristol Baptist Collection (1769, No. 106) under the title "The Resurrection and Ascension," this six-stanza hymn by Thomas Scott became widely used across Great Britain and North America. In 1773, Scott republished it in his Lyric Poems with a revised first stanza beginning "Trembling earth gave awful sign." In 1775, Dr. Thomas Gibbons published an expanded nine-stanza variation in the Gospel Magazine, subsequently including it in his Hymns Adapted to Divine Worship (1784), which led to frequent attribution errors between Scott and Gibbons.
