Published in Charles Wesley's Hymns and Sacred Poems (1740) in five stanzas of four lines, this hymn was originally titled "At setting out to preach the Gospel." Although omitted from the main Wesleyan Hymn Book, a selection consisting of stanzas one, four, and two saw limited use in nineteenth-century American collections, including Hymns of the Spirit (Boston, 1864).
