Written by Anne Steele under the title "The Heavenly Guest," this six-stanza hymn based on Revelation 3:20 was first published in her Poems on Subjects Chiefly Devotional (1760, vol. i, p. 67). It entered general congregational use through Caleb Evans and John Ash's Baptist Bristol Collection (1769) and continues to be sung predominantly in American hymnals.
