Based on 1 Peter 3:18, this widely admired hymn on redemption by Anne Steele was first published in her Poems on Subjects Chiefly Devotional (1760 and 1780, vol. i, p. 175) in six stanzas of four lines under the heading "The wonders of Redemption." Caleb Evans and John Ash brought it into common hymnal usage through their Baptist Bristol Collection (1769). While its use in Great Britain remained moderate, it gained extensive popularity across American collections.
