Composed by Simon Browne in eight stanzas of four lines, this hymn was published under the heading "New Year's Day" in his Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1720, Book I, pp. 44–45). While its adoption in Great Britain remained limited, it saw widespread use in America, generally appearing in abbreviated forms in hymnals such as Major's Book of Praise and Charles Busbridge Snepp's Songs of Grace and Glory.
