John Samuel Bewley Monsell wrote the deeply devotional hymn "Abba, gentle Jesus prayed" to focus on the intimate relationship between the Father and the Son, drawing directly from Christ's own prayers.

The hymn first appeared in the second and enlarged edition of Monsell's widely received collection, Hymns of Love and Praise, published in 1866.

The text was subsequently adopted for broader evangelical use when it was compiled by the Reverend Charles Dent Snepp for his landmark hymnal, Songs of Grace and Glory, in 1872. Snepp chose to print the piece entirely unaltered, preserving Monsell's original Victorian phrasing and thematic framework exactly as it was published in 1866.
