Written by John Samuel Bewley Monsell for the First Sunday in Lent, this nine-stanza hymn was published in Hymns of Love and Praise (1863). Based on the scriptural question in Psalm 78:19, "Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?", an abbreviated five-stanza selection (stanzas 1–4 and 7) was later included as Number 158 in Alton's Supplemental Hymnal (1868 and 1875).
