Composed by Benjamin Beddome on the theme of self-denial, this four-stanza hymn of four lines was first published in John Rippon's Selection of Hymns (1787, No. 281). Though largely absent from modern collections in Great Britain, it achieved widespread use in America across various hymnals, including the Baptist Hymn and Tune Book (1871), Songs for the Sanctuary (1865), and Edwin Francis Hatfield's Church Hymn Book (1872). The original text was reprinted in Robert Hall's 1817 edition of Beddome's Hymns (No. 225).
