Written by John Keble for the Second Sunday in Lent, this fourteen-stanza poem appeared in The Christian Year (1827). Based on Genesis 27:34 and Hebrews 12:17, the text includes a famous introductory note in which Keble cautions against interpreting the poem as an endorsement or condemnation of deathbed repentance, clarifying that Esau's lost opportunity was strictly temporal. A selective cento comprising stanzas one and three through eight appeared in the Gainsburgh Hymns for the Christian Seasons (1854, No. 116).
