Written by Anne Steele in seven stanzas of four lines under the title "The Example of Christ," this text was first published in her Poems on Subjects Chiefly Devotional (1760–1780, vol. i, pp. 122–123) and reprinted by Daniel Sedgwick in 1863. John Rippon introduced it into congregational use in his Baptist Selection of Hymns (1787, No. 166). It subsequently entered the Baptist New Selection (1828), Snepp's Songs of Grace and Glory (1872), and various American hymnals.
