Composed by Samuel Stennett in five stanzas of four lines, this hymn on holy anxiety was contributed to John Rippon's Baptist Selection of Hymns (1787, No. 252). It was later preserved in William Jones's Memoir of Dr. Samuel Stennett (1824) and included in Charles Haddon Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book (1863, No. 640).
