Written by James Montgomery at the request of John Hampden Gurney, this six-stanza hymn was first published in Gurney's Collection of Hymns (Lutterworth, 1838, No. 7). Titled "Christ Jesus our Pattern in doing and suffering," it was subsequently reprinted in the Marylebone Psalms and Hymns (1851) and in Montgomery's own Original Hymns (1853, No. 126).
