Written by Charles Wesley on the narrative of Christ and Peter walking on the water (Matthew 14:23–33), this long hymn of fourteen six-line stanzas was first published in Hymns and Sacred Poems (1749) under the heading "The Tempest." While the full poem never entered general hymnal use, a cento beginning "Oft when the waves of passion rise" constructed from stanzas four, five, seven, eight, and fourteen with slight revisions, was published in the Leeds Hymn Book (1853, No. 291). This adapted version was subsequently reprinted in several collections, including the Baptist Psalms and Hymns (1858) and Sir J. Mason's Orphanage Hymn Book.
