"Almighty God, Thy word is cast" is a post-sermon hymn written by John Cawood around 1815. It was first published in Thomas Cotterill's Selection of Psalms and Hymns (8th edition, 1819, No. 268) in five four-line stanzas, appointed for use after a sermon.
James Montgomery included the hymn in his Christian Psalmist (1825, No. 252), after which it attained broad popularity across English-speaking countries. Two distinct early texts exist: the Cotterill version of 1819 and a manuscript-authentic rendering published by Lord Selborne in his Book of Praise (1862).
