"All powerful, self-existent God" is an anonymous eighteenth-century hymn on the unchangeable nature and immortality of God, based on Psalm 102:27. Composed in six four-line stanzas, it was first published in Bernard Williams's Collection of Hymns for Public Worship on the General Principles of Natural and Revealed Religion (Salisbury, 1778, No. 3).
In 1781, the text was featured as a metrical version of Psalm 102 in Williams's Book of Psalms. After circulating through several Unitarian collections, an altered three-stanza version comprising stanzas one, three, and six appeared in Samuel Longfellow and Samuel Johnson's American collection, Hymns of the Spirit (1864).
