Christ For The World We Sing
Lyrics
the world to Christ we bring
with loving zeal:
the poor and them that mourn,
the faint and overborne,
sin-sick and sorrow-worn,
for Christ doth heal.
the world to Christ we bring
with fervent pray'r:
the wayward and the lost,
by restless passions tossed,
redeemed at countless cost
from dark despair.
the world to Christ we bring
with one accord:
with us the work to share,
with us reproach to dare,
with us the cross to bear,
for Christ our Lord.
the world to Christ we bring
with joyful song:
the newborn souls whose days,
reclaimed from error's ways,
inspired with hope and praise,
to Christ belong.

About This Hymn
“Christ for the World We Sing” was written in 1869 by Samuel Wolcott, an American Congregational minister and missionary-minded preacher. The hymn was born out of Wolcott’s deep concern for the lost and his desire to see the gospel reach every corner of the earth. It became one of the most enduring missionary hymns of the nineteenth century, capturing the spirit of the Great Commission in song. Each stanza calls upon believers to proclaim Christ to sinners, to the poor, to the outcast, and to the brokenhearted, while also pointing to the final triumph when the nations shall come to Christ.
The hymn emphasizes both the breadth and urgency of Christian mission. It reflects the biblical command of Mark 16:15, where Christ instructs His disciples to preach the gospel to every creature. With stirring and inclusive language, Wolcott envisions the church lifting up Christ for the entire world, not just for a single people or nation. This universal scope made the hymn especially powerful during missionary conferences, revivals, and church gatherings where global evangelization was the focus.
Over time, “Christ for the World We Sing” has become a standard in hymnals across denominations. Its message of gospel proclamation and Christ’s ultimate victory continues to inspire Christians to labor for souls and to hold fast to the vision of a redeemed world united in Christ. Samuel Wolcott’s hymn remains a stirring anthem for missions, reminding the church of its calling to lift up Jesus until the nations hear and believe.
