Born on January 13, 1800, Henry Adams Sergison Atwood was educated at Queen's College, Oxford, where he graduated in 1822. Following his ordination, he served successively as curate of Kenilworth, chaplain to the Bishop of Lichfield, and vicar of Ashleworth in Gloucestershire, a position he assumed in 1839.

In 1837, Atwood published Hymns for Private or Congregational Use, for every Sunday in the year. He continued his parochial ministry in Gloucestershire until his death in 1877.
