Written by Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen, this Advent hymn first appeared as the opening entry in his Neues geistreiches Gesang-Buch (1714) in eleven stanzas of seven lines. It was reprinted in Grote's edition of Freylinghausen's Geistliche Lieder (1855) and in the Berlin Geistliche Liederschatz (1863, No. 129).

In English common use, the hymn is best known through the translation by Frances Elizabeth Cox, "Wake! the welcome day appeareth," published in her Sacred Hymns from the German (1841) and revised in Hymns from the German (1864). Another translation, "Wake, oh wake, the day ariseth," was made by Arthur Tozer Russell for his Psalms and Hymns (1851).
