Written by James Montgomery for the Sheffield Sunday School Union Whitsuntide gathering in 1840, this hymn was initially printed on a flysheet for distribution during the festival. Later that year, Montgomery sent the manuscript text to Dr. John Leifchild, who published it in 1842 as No. 31 in his collection Original Hymns in six stanzas of four lines, entitled "For a divine blessing on the ministry of the word."
Montgomery subsequently republished the hymn in his own collection, Original Hymns for Public, Private, and Social Devotion (1853, No. 98), retaining the original title and structure. The text offers a earnest petition for spiritual illumination and pastoral fruitfulness during public worship.
