Authored by Bishop William Walsham How, this devotional text was first published in the Parish Magazine in March 1871 as the first entry in a series of three "Week-day Hymns." Written in five stanzas of four lines, the text was specifically designated for use on Thursdays, reflecting on the theme of Christ's ascension and His ongoing heavenly intercession.
Later in 1871, the hymn was included as No. 58 in the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge volume Church Hymns, with a single verbal alteration in the opening line of the third stanza, changing "Yet, week" to "And week." This slightly revised text, modified by the omission of the second stanza, was also adopted into Godfrey Thring's Collection in 1882. The hymn provided congregations with a focused weekday meditation designed to link daily life and weekly worship back to the ascension of Christ.
