Composed by Joseph Irons on the theme of union with Christ, this hymn was first published in the third edition of his Zion's Songs (1825, No. 191) under the opening line "And is my soul and Jesus one?" It was later adopted into Charles Busbridge Snepp's Songs of Grace and Glory (1872) with the first line slightly modified to "And is my soul with Jesus one?"
