Composed by Amelia Matilda Hull in six stanzas of six lines, this children's hymn was contributed to Henrietta W. Soltau's collection Pleasant Hymns for Boys and Girls (published around 1862). Widely adopted across Sunday school and church collections, it frequently appears in shortened or slightly revised forms in hymnals such as the Hymnal Companion, Edward Henry Bickersteth's Songs of Grace and Glory, and William Major's Book of Praise.
