Among the deepest shades of night

Written by Ann Gilbert (née Taylor) as a children's hymn entitled "Thou God seest me," this piece was first published in five stanzas of four lines in Hymns for Infant Minds (1810) by Jane and Ann Taylor. It became a staple in numerous children's hymn collections throughout the nineteenth century. The original text was retained in Stevenson's Hymns for Church and Home, featuring "to hell" instead of "in hell" in the fourth stanza, and it frequently appears in other collections under the variant opening "Amongst the deepest shades."
