"Afflicted by a gracious God" is an eighteenth-century hymn on affliction written by Charles Wesley. The text is based on Hebrews 10:11.
The hymn was first published in Charles Wesley's Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures (1762, Vol. II, p. 375). It was later reprinted in The Poetical Works of John and Charles Wesley (1868–1872, Vol. XIII, p. 158).
With minor alterations, the text was introduced into common congregational use through its inclusion as No. 331 in the 1875 revised edition of the Wesleyan Hymn-Book. It replaced "Thou, Lord, hast blest my going out," a hymn originally published in Hymns and Sacred Poems (1740).
