Composed by Josiah Conder, this hymn on contentment appeared in his The Star in the East, with Other Poems (1824, pp. 60–61) in four stanzas of six lines, entitled "The Poor Man's Hymn" and based on James 2:5. In his Hymns of Praise, Prayer, and Devout Meditation (1856, p. 147), it was reprinted under the heading of Luke 6:40. Its congregational use began with Edward Bickersteth's Christian Psalmody (1833) and Conder's Congregational Hymn Book (1836, No. 433), after which it was included in the New Congregational Hymn Book (1859) and Clement Snepp's Songs of Grace and Glory (1872).
