About Jack P. Scholfield

Jack P. Scholfield (1882–1972) was a prolific American gospel songwriter, composer, and music publisher who was a significant force in the "convention song" and revivalist movements of the early to mid-20th century. Though formal biographical sketches are rare, his massive output of nearly ninety documented hymn texts and tunes places him among the most active contributors to the Southern Gospel and evangelical songbook tradition. His work is characterized by the high-energy, rhythmic "quartet style" that became popular in rural and small-town churches across the United States.

Scholfield is best known for his enduring gospel masterpiece, "I’ve Found a Friend" (often titled "He’s My Savior True" or "Amigo Hallé"). This hymn, which centers on the theme of Christ’s constant companionship, became an international success and has been translated into numerous languages, including Spanish and Portuguese. Its popularity is reflected in its inclusion in nearly 200 different hymnals. The song utilizes a bright, uplifting melody and a repetitive chorus that made it a favorite for congregational singing and youth rallies.

His lyrics often employed vivid metaphors of journey and safety. He frequently used nautical imagery, as seen in "I’ve an anchor safe and sure" and "Over life’s ocean we’re sailing," as well as themes of guidance, such as "I have a Savior who walks with me" and "In the highway of the King I’m walking." Scholfield’s theology was intensely personal and experiential; he focused on the "sweetness of His love" and the immediate power of salvation, exemplified in the popular chorus "Saved by His power divine."

Scholfield was also deeply involved in the pedagogical side of church music, writing songs like "God will fill our hearts for service" to encourage lay ministry and evangelism. His work provided the "soundtrack" for the mid-century revival movement, balancing the somber reflection of the cross seen in "The cross of Calvary is towering high" with the exuberant joy of the "homeward way."

Living until 1972, Scholfield saw his music transition from the era of traveling singing schools to the age of radio and television gospel broadcasts. He remained a respected figure in the gospel music community, remembered as a craftsman who could distill complex spiritual emotions into catchy, memorable verses that "rolled all burdens away." Today, his songs continue to be sung by those who value the "old-fashioned" clarity and rhythmic drive of the American gospel tradition.
