Triumphant Zion, lift Thy head

By Philip Doddridge

Lyrics

1. Triumphant Zion! lift thy head
From dust and darkness, and the dead;
Tho’ humbled long, awake at length,
And gird thee with thy Saviour’s strength.
Refrain:
Rise, crowned with light,
O Church of Christ, lift up thy head,—
Rise in thy might from dust and darkness and the dead;
Lift up thine eyes—
Behold thy Saviour now appears—
Glorious in pow'r—the Monarch of the years.
2. Put all thy beauteous garments on,
And let thy excellence be known;
The world thy glories shall confess,
Decked in the robes of righteousness.
3. No more shall foes unclean invade,
And fill thy hallowed walls with dread;
No more shall hell’s insulting host
Their vict'ry and thy sorrows boast.
4. God from on high has heard thy prayer;
His hand thy ruin shall repair;
Nor will thy watchful Monarch cease
To guard thee in eternal peace.

About This Hymn

“Triumphant Zion, Lift Thy Head” is a stirring hymn by Philip Doddridge written to encourage the people of God with the promise of divine restoration and victory. Drawing from Isaiah 60:1, which calls Zion to arise and shine because the glory of the Lord has risen upon her, Doddridge shapes the hymn as a declaration of hope for the church. He invites believers to lift their heads in confidence because God’s light overcomes every shadow and His salvation brings renewal and strength.

The hymn reflects Doddridge’s pastoral heart. He wrote with a desire to strengthen congregations that faced trials, discouragement, or spiritual weariness. The imagery of Zion lifting her head speaks of deliverance after a season of difficulty, and Doddridge directs the singer to the truth that God has not forgotten His people. The Lord who once restored Zion continues to uphold His church, guiding her through every challenge and securing her final triumph.

Throughout the hymn, Doddridge reminds believers that God’s promises cannot fail. The church may face opposition from the world, hostility from spiritual foes, or the burden of her own weakness, yet her victory is certain because God Himself is her defender. His truth stands firm, His mercy endures, and His power brings His people safely through every trial.

This hymn has long encouraged Christians to look beyond present hardships and to fix their hope on the faithful God who gathers, protects, and sustains His people. It calls the church to raise her head in courage and to rejoice in the assurance that the Lord will complete His work. Through its steady and confident tone, the hymn helps believers remember that the glory of God rests upon His people and that His salvation will shine brightly until the final day.
