Sweet Is the Work, My God, My King

By Isaac Watts

Lyrics

1. Sweet is the work, my God, my King,
To praise your name, give thanks, and sing,
To show your love by morning light,
And talk of all your truth at night.
2. My heart shall triumph in the Lord,
And bless his works, and bless his Word;
Your works of grace, they brightly shine!
How deep your counsels! how divine!
3. Lord, 'tis a pleasant thing to stand
In gardens planted by your hand;
Let me within your courts be seen,
Like a young cedar, fresh and green.
4. There grow your saints in faith and love,
Blest with your influence from above;
Not Lebanon with all its trees
Yields such a lovely sight as these.
5. The plants of grace shall ever live
(Nature decays, but grace must thrive).
Time, which does all things else impair,
Still makes them flourish, strong and fair.
6. None who attend his gates shall find
A God unfaithful or unkind.
Laden with fruits of age, they show
The Lord is holy, just, and true.

Psalm 92:1-2, Psalm 150:1-6, Colossians 3:17

About This Hymn

“Sweet Is the Work, My God, My King” is a hymn written by Isaac Watts in 1719, reflecting his profound influence on English hymnody and his emphasis on practical, joyful devotion. Watts, often called the “Father of English Hymnody,” sought to provide hymns that encouraged worshippers to express heartfelt praise in both private devotion and corporate worship.

The hymn celebrates the delight and privilege of serving God. Psalm 92:1-2 states, “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night,” capturing the essence of Watts’ emphasis on consistent and joyful praise. Similarly, Psalm 150:1-6 exhorts believers to praise God with every instrument and in every setting, reflecting the hymn’s focus on enthusiastic and deliberate worship.

Watts emphasizes that the work of serving and praising God is both fulfilling and spiritually beneficial. Colossians 3:17 reinforces this theme: “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him,” reminding believers that all acts of service and devotion are sacred and meaningful when offered to God.

Musically, the hymn is traditionally sung with an uplifting, steady melody that inspires reverence and joy, making it suitable for Sunday services, personal devotion, and occasions of thanksgiving. Its simple yet profound language encourages believers to see worship and service not as burdens but as delightful opportunities to honor God.

“Sweet Is the Work, My God, My King” endures as a classic hymn that highlights the joy of faithful service, the delight of praising God consistently, and the spiritual satisfaction that comes from dedicating one’s life to divine purposes. Its combination of scriptural grounding, poetic clarity, and devotional warmth continues to inspire generations of worshippers.
