Virgil Prentiss Brock (1887–1978) was a prominent American evangelist, author, and one of the mid-twentieth century’s most prolific gospel hymnwriters. Born in Celina, Mercer County, Ohio, on January 6, 1887, he was raised within the Quaker tradition. Brock pursued a deep theological education, attending Fairmount Friends Academy, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Earlham College, and completing further studies at the Cleveland Bible Institute and Training School. He was later recognized for his immense impact on sacred music with an honorary Doctor of Sacred Music from Trinity College. Though he pastored several Quaker churches during the early years of his ministry, the vast majority of his life's work was dedicated to widespread evangelistic campaigns. He eventually aligned with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), holding long-term membership at the First Christian Church of Warsaw, Indiana.

In 1914, Brock married Blanche Kerr, initiating a powerful 43-year creative and ministerial partnership. Together, they traveled extensively and collaborated on musical compositions until her death in 1958. The couple settled for many years in Winona Lake, Indiana, a major hub for American religious life and revival music. There, Brock developed a close personal and professional association with the famous music director and publisher Homer Rodeheaver. Consequently, the Rodeheaver Company published the vast majority of Brock’s staggering musical output, which ultimately surpassed 500 hymns and gospel songs. Following the loss of his first wife, Brock married Martha Anderson in 1959, and the pair continued actively serving in church ministries until her passing in 1969.

Brock’s enduring legacy in American hymnody rests on several massively popular gospel songs that became staples of church pews and revival tents alike. His first major breakthrough came in 1918 with the joyous anthem "He's a Wonderful Saviour to Me." Nearly two decades later, he published his most famous and poignant masterpiece, "Beyond the Sunset" (1936), a hymn inspired by a beautiful twilight over Winona Lake that became an iconic song of eternal hope and comfort. His other notable compositions include "Sing and Smile and Pray," "Resting in His Love," "Keep Looking Up," and "I'll Still Live On." Later in life, he penned an autobiography reflecting on his experiences, aptly titled You Asked for It. Brock spent his final six years at the Youth Haven Ranch in Rives Junction, Michigan, and remained an active, beloved speaker and programmer up until his death on March 12, 1978, at the age of 91. He was laid to rest beside his first wife in the Warsaw-Winona Lake Cemetery, where the words and musical notation of "Beyond the Sunset" are permanently engraved onto their shared memorial monument.
