William Aldridge was born in Warminster, Wiltshire, in 1737. He served for several years as an itinerant minister within Lady Huntingdon's Connexion before taking charge of the Jewry Street Chapel in London, where he ministered until his death on February 28, 1797.
In 1776, Aldridge published a volume titled Hymns, compiled for congregational use. The collection proved popular among nonconformist and evangelical worshippers, reaching a fifth edition by 1789. Rare surviving copies of his hymnbook are preserved in the British Museum and the Cheshunt College Library.
