Originating within the liturgical traditions of the Eastern Orthodox Church, "Mark, shining light of Egypt" represents an English rendering of three homoia (hymns of uniform stanzaic structure) appointed for the Feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist on April 25 in the service books of the Menaea.
The English translation was crafted by the scholar and hymnologist Dr. Richard Frederick Littledale. It made its initial public appearance in The People's Hymnal (1867, No. 217), where it was credited under the pseudonym initials "F. R." In adapting the text for Western congregational use, a concluding doxology was appended to the hymn, though this trinitarian stanza has no direct counterpart in the original Greek manuscript.
