Written by James Edmeston, this hymn on the sympathy of Christ was published as No. IV in his Fifty Original Hymns (Northampton, 1833, pp. 7–8). Founded on Hebrews 4:15, it consists of four stanzas of six lines. The original text was reprinted in Charles Rogers's Lyra Britannica (1867). Its congregational use was mainly confined to America, where it was mistakenly attributed to "Wilberforce" in the American Baptist Praise Book (1871).
