Written by Charlotte Elliott, this hymn was first printed in 1834 in the appendix to The Invalid's Hymn Book. Based on Job 22:21 and titled "Under Depression of Spirits," the text consists of eight stanzas of four lines and was retained in all subsequent editions of the work.
