This hymn is a cento drawn from James Merrick's metrical paraphrase of Psalm 104, which originally appeared in his The Psalms, Translated or Paraphrased in English Verse (1765) beginning with the line "Awake, my soul, to hymns of praise." The text was revised by William Dodd Tattersall in 1797 and subsequently adapted into hymnal collections such as Andrew Kippis's Collection of Hymns (1795).
